Prior to 1830, Lake City was called Alpata Telophka, or Alligator Village, by its original residents, the Seminole Tribe of Florida. Sixty miles west of Jacksonville, today Lake City also is known as "The Gateway to Florida," since many tourists drive through the town via I-75 and I-10 on their way to destinations further south.
